The History of Astronomy | Belajar Internet

The History of Astronomy. If you have a passion for star gazing, telescopes, the Hubble and the universe and this thing we call ?astronomy?, you are far from alone.? Of course, we know that astronomy is a highly respected science that has produced some of the most amazing accomplishments of the twentieth century.? On top of that, it is a thriving area of fascination and one of the most exciting hobby areas going with thousands of astronomy clubs and tens of thousands of amateur astronomers watching the stars every night just like we do.

But did you know that astronomy is one of the oldest and most respected sciences of them all?? As far back as before the times of Christ, the wise and thinking people of societies of the time were looking at the stars and finding ways to track and chart them.? We who love the hobby of astronomy can chart a proud history of astronomers that tracks across millennia and through virtually every culture in civilization.? So for the sake of having some really good trivia to toss around at astronomy club next week, let?s highlight some of the big moments in the history of astronomy.

For many centuries the science of astronomy was not distinct from the practice of astrology.? For clarity, astronomy is the study of the stars, planets, and the universe with a clearly scientific approach.? Astrology is the study of the zodiac signs and how they influence our growth, our personalities and our daily lives.? In modern times, we as people of science discount the astrological side and focus on the astronomy of the heavens.? But they were one study for millennia before the age of science made them separate.

There is historical evidence that astronomy was a recognized science as far back as the Babylonian civilization hundreds of years before Christ.? But the study of the stars was not limited to one country.? There were similar movements going on in China, India, and Ancient Egypt and all over the Arabian Peninsula.? The integration of astronomy and religion is so prevalent that we see it in the Christmas story in which the Magi, Zoroastrian priesthood probably from the equivalent of ancient Syria, followed a star to the Christ child.? These astronomers were also astrologers and it was that mixture that lead them to be part of this historic event.

The first book on astronomy was written by Ptolemy during the Greek empire.? Since that historic publication, the who?s who list of great astronomers charts a path right through the center of modern science including Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Sir Issac Newton, Jung, Michelangelo, Benjamin Franklin and more recently even Einstein and Stephen Hawkings would join that noble list.? It seemed that from the renaissance on to this day, virtually any man or woman of intellect dabbled in astronomy at least somewhat and it has always been considered a sign of the learned to know about the universe and things astronomical.

Astronomy has had an impact on so many areas of our lives that we really don?t recognize.? Many words in our language had their roots in astronomy such as?

*??????? Influenza which comes from the Latin root word for influence.? This reflects an early belief that the position of the moon and stars may influence health and cause or cure disease.

*??????? Disaster which comes from the Latin for ?bad star?.

*??????? Lunatic which has the root word "Luna" in it which is the Latin word for moon.? This highlights the long held belief that is even prevalent today that irrational behavior and even wild and dangerous things happen during a full moon.

Astronomy and its interrelationship with astrology has also influenced culture, education and religion to a very large extent over the centuries.? In the English language, the first two days or our week, Sunday and Monday are a reference to astronomy as their literal interpretations would be ?The Day of the Sun? and ?The Day of the Moon.???

So if you have found astronomy becoming a consuming passion in your thoughts and what fascinates you about the world we live in, you are in great company as this area of study has been a major part of culture and thought virtually since the dawn of civilization.? And it will continue to fascinate mankind for as long as those beautiful stars shine over our heads.

Kenya rebukes US, EU countries over poll comments

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Kenya's foreign affairs minister on Monday criticized European Union ambassadors in person for what he called an orchestrated attempt to favor a presidential candidate in Kenya's upcoming elections.

Kenya will hold the election on March 4. One of the top contenders for president is Uhuru Kenyatta, who faces charges before the International Criminal Court related to postelection violence that killed more than 1,000 people after Kenya's last presidential election in 2007.

The top U.S. State Department official for Africa, Johnnie Carson, appeared last week to warn Kenyans from voting for Kenyatta. Shortly afterward, France and Switzerland said they would have only essential contact with Kenya's top leadership if Kenyatta wins the presidency.

Foreign Minster Sam Ongeri ? a key ally of Kenyatta ? on Monday summoned EU ambassadors to relay his displeasure over those statements. The U.S. ambassador was not at the meeting but Kenya sent a diplomatic note to the U.S. asking for an explanation of Carson's statement.

"This is a major exercise which is being done in the history of this country and therefore Kenyans must be left to ponder slowly and carefully how they are going to choose their leaders, not be imposed. This is a democratic state ... we least expect any interference at this level by anybody from any quarter and Kenyans must be left to make their choices," Ongeri said.

The remarks made by EU envoys are clearly inflammatory and could have the effect of polarizing the country, said Ongeri, who is Kenyatta's point man for election efforts in the western Kenya region of Kisii.

The EU ambassadors informed the foreign affairs ministry that they rejected allegations of interfering with Kenya's elections, said a statement from the EU. Continued cooperation with the ICC is of vital importance, regardless of who is elected as president, the statement said.

Ongeri said elections will be closely contested and statements warning of consequences of a Kenyatta win could amount to taking sides and even allegations of advance rigging. Ongeri noted that the EU is an accredited observer of Kenya's elections, but he said the statements from member countries put into doubt whether the EU delegation can be counted as impartial.

Job Interview Attire: Fashion Horror Stories

Josh Tolan is the CEO of Spark Hire, a video-powered hiring network that connects job seekers and employers through video resumes and online interviews. Connect with him and Spark Hire on Facebook and Twitter.

You?ve researched the company and practiced your interview answers. What else is there to worry about? Unfortunately, many candidates flub their interview attire and make themselves undesirable hires in the process. Here are some of the worst fashion horror stories and what you can learn before you suit up for your next job interview:

You?re Not an Employee Yet

Companies come in all different shapes and sizes ? and all different levels of formality. One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is to show up for the interview dressed like an employee instead of a candidate.

?Since we're a casual work environment with no dress code, we occasionally get the candidate that matches our attire and it comes off as overly presumptuous, overconfident or just plain sloppy,? said August Nielsen, HR Manager of Veterans United Home Loans.

Instead, you should dress for a job at least one rung on the career ladder above the one for which you?re applying. This will be highly impressive to your interviewer and show just how seriously you?re taking this opportunity. Plus, it will convey the message to your potential employer that you?re interested in moving up and bettering yourself.

?I also interviewed a guy that wore old tennis shoes with a suit. What was that all about?? Nielsen wondered. ?They weren't even new tennis shoes.?

Remember, the interview is not the right moment to try out a quirky new style. You?re not Mark Zuckerberg, and hoodies or old tennis shoes won?t make an impressive interview statement.

You Forgot Your Pants

A recent survey showed six out of ten companies use video interviews in the hiring process. So, chances are, you?ll have one ? and you can?t afford to think the video interview is somehow less formal than a face-to-face meeting ? it?s not.

Just because the interviewer is looking directly at your top half doesn?t mean you can ignore what you wear below the waist.

?We had a candidate who was very impressive from the waist up,? said Sandi Webster, Principal for Consultants 2 Go. ?However, he had to run to his printer for a sheet we had sent and he was wearing pajama bottoms.?

It?s important to dress exactly as you would for any in-person meeting. While video interviewing provides the luxury of interviewing from home, you should still present yourself as if you?re going to the office. Not only does it help you avoid the pajama debacle, but also it helps give you a psychological edge. If you?re dressed for the part, you?ll be more likely to act the part, as well.

You?re Repping Other Companies

Because your clothes tell a story about your candidacy, if you don?t pay attention to the small details, employers will think you?ll miss the big picture on the job as well.

?If you're interviewing at LL Bean, don't wear J. Crew. If you're interviewing at CNA Insurance, please don't carry a portfolio emblazoned with the Prudential logo,? said Lida Citroen, branding specialist and founder of LIDA360. "These small missteps make the interviewer question your attention to detail and commitment to going the extra mile for the job."

Instead, keep things neutral. It?s good practice to stay away from loud prints or company logos altogether, which might be a distraction anyway. So, swap your branded briefcase for a plain case to avoid any issues.

You Didn?t Check the Thermometer

Job interviews make many candidates extremely nervous. If you live in a hot climate or your interview is during a hot summer day, this can be a recipe for a sweaty disaster.

Resume writer and career counselor Gaye Weintraub remembers a job candidate who showed up for the job interview with professional attire that was too tight, and he had giant sweat stains under his arms.

?While he dressed appropriately for his interview, it was difficult to get past the sweat stains and his unbelievably red face. I felt sorry for him, which is not the type of reaction any job seeker wants from an interviewer,? Weintraub said.

It?s important not to forget you are only human, and the combination of nerves and raising temperatures can be lethal. Instead, Weintraub advises candidates to bring an extra shirt along if the temperatures rise and the candidate is prone to sweating. This way, job seekers can change in a nearby bathroom before the interview and appear fresh and ready for the actual meeting.

?I tell my clients that it takes an interviewer only a few seconds to form an opinion of them. It is imperative that when they walk into the room, they are well-groomed, well-dressed, smell nice and have a smile,? Weintraub said.

You Treated the Interview Like a Tailgate

You want to dress for your interview, not for your next social engagement. Catherine Bell, former fashion designer and President of PRIME Impressions tells the story of how a man showed up for a mass interview for Sears wearing shorts and a sleeveless tank top. To top it all off, he was also holding an open can of beer in his hand.

?He obviously had another agenda outside of landing a job that day,? Bell said.

Carving out time in your hectic life for an interview can be tough, especially if you already have a job keeping you busy. It?s important, however, to focus all your attention on the interview at hand, instead of what else you have going on for the rest of the day. Turn off your mobile devices so nothing will beep, vibrate or chirp during your interview. And if you're planning on tailgating after your interview, leave the drinks in the cooler.

If you can avoid some of these fashion pitfalls, you?ll be able to impress hiring managers with your appearance, so what you wear doesn?t detract from what you say.

What are some of the worst job-interview fashion mistakes you?ve seen? Share in the comments.

Jack Lew's Cayman Islands investment flagged

Jack Lew, President Barack Obama?s Treasury Secretary nominee, previously held up to $100,000 in investments in an offshore hedge fund located in the Cayman Islands, according to financial disclosure forms.

Lew?s financial disclosure forms, filed in 2009 and 2011, showed that Lew had invested between $50,000 and $100,000 in a fund called Citigroup Venture Capital International Growth Partnership (Employee) II, L.P. -- the very type of fund President Obama has repeatedly criticized.

The fund is an international venture capital fund for employees of Citigroup. According to his official White House biography, Lew served as managing director and chief operating officer of Citi Global Wealth Management and then Citi Alternative Investments (CAI) from 2006 to 2008.

Lew himself isn't commenting, but a person familiar with Lew?s investment told NBC News that Lew invested a total of $56,000 and sold it at a loss for $54,418 in November 2010 after being confirmed as director of the federal Office of Management and Budget.

The source also told NBC News that Lew had no role in creating, managing or operating the fund, and that Citigroup had organized the fund in the Cayman Islands and made it available to other employees. The source said that many other Citigroup employees had investments in the fund.

According to a Securities and Exchange Commission document, the fund was registered at what has been called a notorious address in the Cayman Islands, located in the Caribbean in the British West Indies. Specifically, the fund?s address was a post office box in a building called Ugland House, in the capital city of George Town on Grand Cayman, the largest of the three Cayman islands.

In 2007 as a presidential candidate and in 2009 as president, Obama identified Ugland House as part of an outrageous tax scam, because according to filings, it housed 12,000 businesses that all claimed the building as their headquarters.

?For years, we've talked about shutting down overseas tax havens that let companies set up operations to avoid paying taxes in America,? Obama said in remarks about tax reform in 2009. ?Either this is the largest building in the world, or the largest tax scam in the world. And I think the American people know which it is. That's the kind of tax scam that we need to end.?

A political ad targeting Republican candidate Mitt Romney during the 2012 presidential campaign asked, ?Why would Mitt Romney invest millions in the Cayman Islands??

Tonight, after NBC News asked for comment, White House spokesman Eric Schultz issued a lengthy statement:

?Jack Lew paid all of his taxes and reported all of the income, gains and losses from the investment on his tax returns. The existence of Mr. Lew?s investment is not news to the Senate.

?Mr. Lew disclosed the investment in his prior confirmations, before three separate committees, for Deputy Secretary of State in 2009 and Director of the Office of Management and Budget in 2010, and he was confirmed by the Senate unanimously on both occasions.

?Twelve Members of the Finance Committee, including five Republicans, were members of the three committees that previously reviewed Mr. Lew?s nominations. All three committees reported Mr. Lew?s nomination to the Senate unanimously.

?Mr. Lew disclosed the investment to the Office of Government Ethics and to ethics officials at the State Department and OMB, including on his public financial disclosure forms, in connection with both of his previous confirmations. He played no role in creating, managing or operating the fund and he sold his investment in 2010 at a net loss.

?There are no new facts that provide a basis for Senators to reach a different conclusion about Mr. Lew?s nomination than they reached twice before in this Administration.?

A Democratic spokesman for the Senate Finance Committee, which will hold a confirmation hearing on Lew?s nomination on Wednesday, said that Lew?s investment had come up again through its current vetting process, raised by both Republican and Democrat members. The spokesman said once the committee had looked into the matter, it had determined the investment was not an issue. The spokesman said Lew had been completely transparent and forthcoming through any and all questions that have been posed.

But Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley, a Republican member of the Senate Finance Committee, disputed the Obama administration?s and the Democratic committee spokesman?s statements.

?It was disclosed only if you knew where to look and then were able to put the pieces together,? Grassley said in a statement late Friday. ?To say this information was fully disclosed to the public is misleading, at best.?

Grassley noted Obama?s criticism of Ugland House-based investment funds came while Lew, now his Treasury Secretary nominee, had investments in one of those funds. Lew didn?t divest his Cayman Island investment until almost the end of 2010, when he was already working for the administration, and a year after the president publicly railed against such offshore accounts as tax havens.

?The irony is thick,? Grassley said.

NBC News' Ali Weinberg contributed to this report.
