Spurs visit vulnerable City as title race heats up

LONDON (AP) -Loaned out by Manchester City for the past 12 months, Emmanuel Adebayor will be denied the chance to show what the Premier League leaders are missing when his new club Tottenham visits the Etihad Stadium for a key match in the title race on Sunday.

The restrictions of Adebayor's season-long loan move to Spurs prevent him from facing City, robbing them of their attacking spearhead for arguably their biggest game of the season.

The Togo striker has become a crowd favorite at White Hart Lane, scoring a team-high nine league goals to justify Harry Redknapp's controversial decision to bring in a player who turned out for the team's fierce rival Arsenal from 2006-09.

His situation at City couldn't have been more different, dropping down the pecking order soon after his 25 million pounds move from Arsenal and quickly out of favor with manager Roberto Mancini. He was farmed out to Real Madrid for the second half of last season.

"Sometimes it's possible that you have a situation like this - you have good players but he wants to play always and this is difficult in a top team," Mancini said. "If you have one striker who needs to play always it is not easy.

"I am happy for Manu because he is playing very well for Tottenham."

City has key players missing themselves as the team looks to extend its perfect home record to 11 league matches.

Captain Vincent Kompany serves the third match of his four-game suspension and key midfielder Yaya Toure is at the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast, along with his brother and fellow City player Kolo.

Striker Mario Balotelli and right back Micah Richards return from injury but City has been lacking the class and verve that saw them take the league by storm in the first few months of the season, including a 5-1 win at Spurs in August.

Once a match between two perennial underachievers in the English game - neither side has won the league since the 1960s - City-Tottenham has suddenly taken on a much bigger profile.

"They are not invincible," Redknapp said. "I think we can win. We will go there as a positive team. I wouldn't want to go there and sit back.

"We have people who can hurt them."

In what is the most crucial weekend in the title race so far, second-place Manchester United will also look to keep the pressure on City when it travels to fifth-place Arsenal on Sunday.

United is three points behind its neighbor as the team bids to extend its record haul of titles to 20 but for Arsenal, qualification for the Champions League is the priority this season.

Arsene Wenger's team could drop seven points off the top four if it loses to United and fourth-place Chelsea wins at Norwich on Saturday.

"I still think that when we have everybody available we are a strong force in this league," Wenger said. "That's why it is important that we fight very hard not to drop points."

Arsenal, though, has lost its last two matches - to Fulham and Swansea - and is still without a fit full back, although central defender Thomas Vermaelen could return from a calf injury. Thierry Henry, hoping to feature in his third match since joining on a two-month loan for a second spell at Arsenal, will have a fitness test on a calf injury.

United, which thrashed Arsenal 8-2 at Old Trafford in the first match between the teams this season, is set to welcome back England defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones from minor injuries.

The rest of the matches come on Saturday, when defender Gary Cahill could make his debut for Chelsea at Carrow Road following his move from Bolton.

Sixth-place Newcastle visits Fulham and Liverpool travels to next-to-last Bolton.

Mark Hughes takes charge of his first home league match at third-bottom Queens Park Rangers when Wigan visits in a key match in the relegation battle.

Also Saturday, it's Everton vs. Blackburn, Stoke City vs. West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland vs. Swansea and Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Aston Villa.

Elusive Z- DNA found on nucleosomes

Friday, January 20, 2012

New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Cell & Bioscience is the first to show that left-handed Z-DNA, normally only found at sites where DNA is being copied, can also form on nucleosomes.

The structure of DNA which provides the blueprint for life has famously been described as a double helix. To save space inside the nucleus, DNA is tightly wound around proteins to form nucleosomes which are then further wound and compacted into chromatin, which is further compacted into chromosomes.

But this familiar image of a right handed coil (also called B-DNA) is not the only form of DNA. At sites where DNA is being copied into RNA (the messenger which is used as the instruction to make proteins) the DNA needs to unwind, and, in a process of negative supercoiling, can form a left-handed variety of the DNA double helix (Z-DNA).

It was originally thought that Z-DNA could only be formed in the presence of active RNA polymerase (the enzyme which assembles RNA). However more recently it has been discovered that SWI/SNF, a protein involved in remodeling nucleosomes and allowing RNA polymerase access to DNA, can convert certain sequences of B to Z-DNA.

The team of researchers led by Dr Keji Zhao discovered that they could convert B-DNA to Z-DNA on nucleosomes by the addition of SWI/SNF and ATP (the cell's energy source) and that the Z-nucleosome formed was a novel structure.

Dr Zhao, from the NIH, explained, "The fact that we have found Z-DNA on nucleosomes is a new step in understanding the roles of chromosome remodeling and Z-DNA in regulating gene expression. While the Z-nucleosome is likely to be a transient structure it nevertheless provides a window of opportunity for the placement of DNA binding proteins which may recruit, regulate, or block the transcription machinery and hence protein expression."

US Sen. Brown kicks off campaign re-election bid (AP)

WORCESTER, Mass. ? U.S. Sen. Scott Brown has officially kicked off his re-election campaign, casting his chief Democratic opponent Elizabeth Warren as an ideologue and pledging to be an independent voice in a deeply partisan Congress.

Brown, speaking to a crowd of cheering supporters, said he would continue to oppose the health care law signed by President Barack Obama and would fight against wasteful government spending.

Brown timed his Thursday evening event to coincide with the anniversary of his special election win in 2010 that catapulted him into the office once held by the late Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Brown also criticized what he called "establishment candidates" who wage class warfare by pitting one group of Americans against another and attacking the country's free enterprise system.

Warren called those remarks part of the "standard Republican playbook."

Lost snowshoer burned cash, socks to survive

The survival of a 66-year-old snowshoer who spent two nights on Mount Rainier was being called a miracle, even as National Park Service staff waited out bad weather to see if four overdue hikers are OK.

Yong Chun Kim said he survived by using fire starters to burn leaves and eventually $1 and $5 bills in his wallet as well as socks, KOMO TV of Seattle reported.

Kim also told said he marched in place to keep warm and took shelter in a tree well.

Kim was rescued after searchers traversed deep snow at 6,300 feet and snowshoed up a river valley to pull him from the icy remote backcountry.

The team reached Kim on Monday afternoon but it wasn't until 11 p.m. local time that he was brought from the rugged terrain covered in deep snow to a road, Mount Rainier National Park spokeswoman Lee Taylor said late Monday.

She told the News Tribune newspaper of Tacoma, Wash., that he did not need to go to a hospital and instead was going home. Kim "seems to be in good shape and we're just thrilled to have been able to bring this search to such a successful conclusion," Taylor said.

Taylor said the experienced snowshoer from Tacoma was alert, conscious and stable when he was found by three searchers.

He was reported missing on Saturday after he fell down a slope and became separated from a group he was leading in the Paradise area, a popular high-elevation destination on the mountain's southwest flank, about a 100-mile drive south from Seattle.

Kim, who has been snowshoeing for a decade, was well equipped for a day trip but didn't have overnight gear and the weather was not helpful.

"The weather was wintry, with fresh snow each day, low temperatures in the teens, and high winds," the park service said.

Because Kim was the leader of his group, other snowshoers weren't able to accurately describe where he had slipped, Taylor said. Searchers had initially believed Kim fell in a different area, based on descriptions from the group, Taylor said.

Taylor said he was in a remote area with deep snow. Mount Rainier has seen temperatures in the teens, and eight inches of new snow fell in some places since Saturday. Wind-blown snow drifts were as high as 30 inches in some areas.

Bad weather prevented a helicopter rescue, so crews used a Sno-Cat snow vehicle to reach the area where Kim was. Then "searchers had to snowshoe up the river valley to reach him, load him into a kind of a litter that could be slid across the snow, sort of a sled, bring him back down and get him back into the Sno-Cat and bring the Sno-Cat back out to the road," Taylor said.

Kim's son, Malcom An, thanked authorities and the rescuers in a statement released through the National Park Service.

"It?s a miracle that he is alive," he said, "but it?s an assisted miracle. I want to thank all the volunteers and the National Park Service staff who worked so hard to find my father."

With a new storm moving into the Seattle area Tuesday night , Mount Rainier staff said Tuesday that two climbers are one day overdue and two campers are two days overdue.

The campers were on the Muir snowfield, where it's been below zero in recent days with winds up to 90 mph, the News Tribune reported.

The climbers were also on the mountain but their route was not immediately known.

The couple, Mark Bucich of San Diego, Calif., and Michelle Trojanowski of Atlanta, Ga., had planned to summit the 14,411-foot mountain and then return Sunday afternoon. They are said to be skilled climbers with enough camping gear to stay out several nights, KOMO TV reported.

"Both parties are equipped for camping in winter weather," the park service said in a statement. "Due to weather conditions it is expected that they are waiting out the weather before attempting their descents."

"A limited field search is underway," the park added, "but putting searchers extensively on the mountain is not expected due to the risk involved including current severe weather, white out conditions and high avalanche danger.

In a separate incident, a backcountry skier at Crystal Mountain, right across from Mount Rainier, was lucky to be alive after getting lost Friday. A search team found him that night suffering from hypothermia and pulled him out at 6 a.m. Saturday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Dozens of Tibetans gather with Dalai Lama picture (AP)

BEIJING ? Dozens of Tibetans, including monks, held up a portrait of the Dalai Lama in a community in southwestern China in an act of defiance days after other Tibetans set themselves on fire to protest Chinese rule.

Police in Seda county said Tuesday that officers dealt with the gathering, but declined to say whether any of the Tibetans were arrested in the incident Monday.

China is sensitive to protests by Tibetans because they threaten its control over its western region and may inspire protests in other parts of China by people with possible grievances against the government.

At least 16 Buddhist monks, nuns and other Tibetans are believed to have set themselves on fire in the past year ? four this month ? mostly in traditionally Tibetan areas of Sichuan province. Most have chanted for Tibetan freedom and the return of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who fled to India amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

China has vilified the Dalai Lama for more than a decade, accusing him of a campaign to split the Himalayan region from the rest of China, and has tried to get monks to denounce him in political education programs held in religious institutions in Tibetan areas. The Dalai Lama says he is only seeking increased autonomy for Tibet.

On Monday, fewer than 100 Tibetans gathered and held a portrait of the Dalai Lama, said the official at Seda county public security bureau in Sichuan province who gave only his surname, Wang. "The New Year festival is coming up so they want to draw attention by creating an incident," he said, referring to the Chinese New Year later this month.

Wang said police dealt with the incident, but declined to give any further details.

An official from the Seda county government said there was no protest Monday.

Fears of protests by Tibetans were why Premier Wen Jiabao kept a trip to Nepal at the weekend secret, according to the Nepalese prime minister. Wen arrived Saturday in the tiny Himalayan nation that is home to thousands of Tibetan refugees.

"The visit was not announced, as the Tibetan activities have intensified recently," Baburam Bhattarai was quoted as saying in Monday's English-language Republica newspaper.

Tibetans in Nepal regularly protest against Chinese restrictions on Tibetan religion and culture. In November, a man wearing the robes of a Tibetan Buddhist monk set himself on fire in the Nepalese capital, Katmandu, emulating the self-immolations in China. The most recent was on Saturday in Sichuan.

Dicki Chhoyang, a Cabinet member of the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharmsala, India, said China could have expected protests because of "the large presence of Tibetans inside Nepal and the fact that China has been so forceful in influencing Nepal's treatment of Tibetans inside Nepal." She said this included restricting Tibetans' political activities and refusing to issue refugee cards to Tibetan refugees.

In response to a question Monday about why Wen's trip to Nepal was unannounced, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said it "was arranged on ad hoc basis." He said it showed the "importance the Chinese side gives to China-Nepal relations."

Fresh iPhone Apps for Jan. 18: GroupShot, Moonit, Monkey Quest, Scramble With Friends (Appolicious)

Get a hand taking some solid group photos with the help of GroupShot, an app that lets you switch parts of photos with other parts to help you get the photos where nobody is blinking. Moonit, our next Fresh App, makes it easy to find people based on your astrological sign. Monkey Quest: Thunderbow leads our games selections, adding explosives to the Angry Birds-like physics-based arcade gameplay, followed by Scramble With Friends, a social game similar to Boggle and playable on the Internet.

GroupShot (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Photography app GroupShot might help save a few shots for you iPhone photographers out there. It?s a nifty little app that lets you take multiple photos and switch some of the subjects between them. The example used on the app?s iTunes App Store page is one of a family sitting in the grass, with three different photos taken of them. In no single photo is everyone looking forward and smiling. With GroupShot, you can take the best of each photo and combine it to make one good shot at the end.

GroupShot makes editing easy, as well. Just highlight the area of the photo you want replaced with your finger and select another shot you want to replace it with, and the app does all the work. You?ll just need several shots with your subjects, like family members, in the same relative places for the app to do its magic.

Moonit (iPhone, iPad) Free

With Valentine?s Day approaching, social networking app Moonit might be a good way for some iPhone and iPad owners to meet new people ? potentially to spend a romantic holiday with. Moonit is geared toward helping you find local people through astrology, matching your sign to theirs to test compatibility related to when you were born.

The app makes it easy to connect with people, but it also gives a detailed ?date of birth analysis? to determine just how astrologically compatible you might be with others. Once you?ve found someone you?re interested in meeting, the app contains chat tools that allow you to interact. The more people you meet, the more stickers and badges you unlock for use within the network, as well.

Sure, there are a lot of Angry Birds-alike games in the iTunes App Store, but the best ones add their own spin to the festivities. Monkey Quest?s addition: explosives. Lots of them. You play a monkey fighting off scorpions with a bow that fires explosive arrows. In order to take out all the enemies and rack up the biggest score, you?ll have to put your explosive attacks in key positions to demolish structures, snag bananas and set off chain reaction.

Monkey Quest packs several dozen levels to play through, and the game will continually outfit you with new weapons to help you bring the mayhem to your enemies. It includes Game Center support for achievements ad leaderboards, and it links in with MonkeyQuest.com, giving players unique gifts for the website?s game that can?t be earned any other way.

The latest in the ?With Friends? series from Zynga With Friends comes Scramble With Friends. It takes a page from the previous titles in Words With Friends and Hanging With Friends, Scramble With Friends has players taking turns as they challenge other players over the Internet and on Facebook. Where Words With Friends tapped Scrabble, Scramble With Friends is more akin to Boggle.

Each player takes a turn identifying as many words from a bank of scrambled letters as possible. You identify the words by tracing your finger over the letters in order. The more words you find, the better your score will be, but you only have a limited time to come up with your combinations. When you?re done, you wait for your opponent to do the same, and then tally up the scores.
