Arctic News: Arctic Methane Release: "Economic Time Bomb"

On March 19, 2013, a number of experts came together for an Ecorys.com workshop, as part of a
study?examining the impact of a 50-Gt release of methane from the melting permafrost at the East Siberian Arctic Shelf (ESAS)?over different time periods, ranging from one to five decades.

Back in 2008, a study by Natalia Shakhova et al. considered release of up to 50 Gt of predicted amount of hydrate storage as highly possible for abrupt release at any time.

In order to estimate the cost of such a release, this new study used a more recent version of the model used in the renowned Stern Report. Findings of the study are published in the journal Nature. The conclusion is that such a release from the ESAS alone comes - in the absence of mitigating action - with a price tag of $60 trillion. By comparison, the size of the world economy in 2012 was about $70 trillion.

Such a methane pulse will "bring forward 15?35 years the average date at which the global mean temperature rise exceeds 2?C above pre-industrial levels", says the paper.

"The economic consequences will be distributed around the globe, but the modelling shows that about 80% of them will occur in the poorer economies of Africa, Asia and South America. The extra methane magnifies flooding of low-lying areas, extreme heat stress, droughts and storms."

"The total cost of Arctic change will be much higher," says the paper. To find out the actual cost, more feedbacks should be incorporated in the model, such as linking the extent of Arctic ice to increases in Arctic mean temperature.?The full impacts of a warming Arctic include, for example, ocean acidification and altered ocean and atmospheric circulation. "Midlatitude economies such as those in Europe and the United States could be threatened, for example, by a suggested link between sea-ice retreat and the strength and position of the jet stream, bringing extreme winter and spring weather. Unusual positioning of the jet stream over the Atlantic is thought to have caused?this year?s protracted cold spell in Europe."

A claim that thousands of women have died because they avoided estrogen therapy represents an oversimplification of the issues and reinforces the risks of partial analyses, say investigators in the Women?s Health Initiative (WHI).

Hormone therapy, whether hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or unopposed estrogen (without a counterbalance of a progesterone), confers risks and benefits that vary according to a woman?s age, time since menopause and numerous other factors.

The WHI showed that postmenopausal hormone has variable effects and emphasized the need for individualized therapy, said JoAnn E. Manson, MD, of Brigham and Women?s Hospital in Boston.

?I don?t think the WHI estrogen-alone trial can be interpreted as simply leading to many excess deaths among younger women,? Manson told?MedPage Today. ?In fact, it was saving many lives among the older age groups, and across all age groups it was helping clinicians identify the most appropriate candidates for therapy and minimizing some of the adverse events.?

?The WHI results were never intended to be generalized to younger women who have early surgical menopause and early removal of the ovaries prior to the onset of menopause,? she added.

The analysis,?published last week, was not so much a study as it was a math exercise, said WHI investigator Andrea LaCroix, MD, of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. She was the lead author of a 2011 report that provided the genesis for the new analysis of women, ages 50 to 59, who had hysterectomies.

?They [authors of the new analysis] took one statistic ? and put it into a formula and calculated the expected number deaths under a set of assumptions that may or may not be reasonable,? said LaCroix. ?That?s what they published. Is that true?

?These data from the WHI were first reported in 2004, and there were declines in estrogen use in 2002,? she added. ?My first question is, where is the real evidence that death rates have increased in women 50 to 59 in the U.S. in those communities where the greatest decreases in hormone therapy have occurred??

The reaction centered on a study suggesting that as many as 91,000 women ages 50 to 59 might have died prematurely as a consequence of avoiding unopposed estrogen therapy after hysterectomy. At a minimum, the authors estimated, 18,000 women died prematurely over the past 10 years.

?As a result (of the methodology), the findings are unreliable projections, which are, at best, hypothesis-generating and should not inform clinical practice,? said WHI investigator Rowan Chlebowski, MD, of the University of California Los Angeles.

?We don?t highlight or make any clinical recommendations based on speculative projections based on subgroup analyses of breast cancer adjuvant or advanced disease trials. The same caution should be given in this case, where headline prominence in media reports seems to suggest more importance than such a speculative hypothesis can support.?

Authors of last week?s report took the media to task for oversimplification of WHI findings, often with the complicity of researchers and clinicians. Chlebowski did the same.

?I recognize the general interest in menopausal hormone therapy findings, but it seems the media should weigh carefully the strength of any evidence presented before endorsing an author?s conclusions,? he said.

Beyond cautions about the validity of subgroup analyses, Manson said ?estrogen therapy should not be used routinely in women with hysterectomy after age 50. It?s also important to understand that the WHI was studying women who were postmenopausal.

?The findings do not necessarily apply to women who have hysterectomy and surgical menopause at a younger age, 40 or 45, where it?s clear, much clearer, that the benefits of estrogen therapy will outweigh the risk for nearly all women who undergo early surgical menopause.?

In the 2004 and 2011 reports, WHI investigators emphasized the need for counseling about the appropriateness of postmenopausal hormonal treatment, whether estrogen alone or estrogen plus progestin. In the same vein, LaCroix took issue with any implied promises about the benefits of estrogen therapy.

?There is no pill available that will reduce the risk of death in postmenopausal women,? she said. ?Anyone who implies otherwise is overreaching.?

White House applauds EU decision on Hezbollah

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House is applauding the European Union's decision to label the military wing of Hezbollah a terrorist group.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says it sends a clear message that there are consequences for the Lebanese group's terrorist activities, including a deadly attack last year in a Bulgarian resort and a plot to kill Israelis in Cyprus.

Carney says the EU decision will allow European officials to crack down on Hezbollah's fundraising, logistics and terror plots in Europe.

He says Hezbollah threatens global stability. He's specifically mentioning Hezbollah's support for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The EU's 28 foreign ministers reached the decision unanimously on Monday. The Iranian-backed Hezbollah plays a pivotal role in Lebanese politics and has sent members to bolster Assad's forces in their assault of rebel-held areas.

From Rome to Rio: Masses welcome Pope Francis to Brazil

2 million pilgrims are expected to visit Rio this week for the first international trip by the new Pontiff, and the first visit by a South American Pope to the continent.

50,000 The number of? residents in the Manguinhos favela in the south of the country, which the Pope will visit on Thursday afternoon. Also on Thursday he will receive the ?golden keys? to the city, before saying mass on Copacabana beach.

?102m? Estimated cost for the five-day visit, 70 per cent of which will come from sponsorship and pilgrims, and 30 per cent from the government; estimates claim World Youth Day alone will boost Brazil?s economy by $1.2bn (?780 million).

More than 7,000 are expected from America; 7,000 will also attend from Italy, while Spain has registered 3,000, 2,000 are coming from Germany and a further 1,700 from Poland. In total, organisers expect to welcome representatives from all 45 European countries.

1.36million? The evening vigil and final mass on 27 and 28 July will be held at Campus Fidei in Guaratiba, where a 1.36 million sq metre complex has been built to receive the pilgrims. The site contains 4,673 toilets, 615 washbasins, 4,920 water fountains, 2,016 urinals and 33 LED video screens for the? audience to watch proceedings.
