GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) ? Retired schoolteacher Dolores Rommel has followed the Rev. Robert H. Schuller almost her entire adult life: She was baptized in his church as a young woman, sent her children to his Sunday school and laid her husband to rest near the soaring, glass-paned Crystal Cathedral that was to be the televangelist's ultimate legacy.

But when the Roman Catholic church bought the famous sanctuary and its cemetery in bankruptcy court last year, Rommel began looking for another spiritual home. She has resigned herself to being entombed in a Catholic cemetery so she can be near her husband, but not without plenty of soul-searching.

"I have no choice. I am going to be buried there because that was his choice and we paid a lot for that vault," said Rommel, who bought a two-casket tomb with her husband in 1997. "At the time, who would know that this was going to happen?"

The Crystal Cathedral congregation recently announced that it will vacate its modernist steel-and-glass church by June 2013. The Diocese of Orange re-baptized the church Christ Cathedral earlier this month and plans to turn the Protestant landmark where the "Hour of Power" TV ministry is based into its spiritual and administrative headquarters. The fast-growing, 1.2 million-person diocese bought the church campus for nearly $58 million last year.

The upcoming transition has been an emotional one for many longtime congregants like Rommel, who watched Schuller's blockbuster dynasty struggle to survive in recent years amid declining donations, a disastrous leadership transition and an endless family squabble that split the congregation.

Schuller built the church ? an architectural marvel with 10,000 windows and room for nearly 3,000 worshippers and 1,000 musicians ? in 1980, a decade after he began broadcasting his sermons on the "power of possibility thinking" into the homes of millions of evangelical Christians each Sunday.

Reaction to the church's sale was at first bitter: The children of one prominent philanthropist publicly threatened to disinter their father from its cemetery and another congregant sued for $30 billion, saying the transfer to Catholic hands had "permanently desecrated, defamed, polluted and cursed" the church.

Tempers have since cooled, but the recently announced timeline for the transfer to Catholic hands has revived questions about the fate of Schuller's ministry once it leaves behind the iconic building that gave it its name. The diocese will grant the congregation six months rent-free at a nearby Catholic church and it plans to continue filming the "Hour of Power."

"We could film in a studio," said John Charles, the new CEO of Crystal Cathedral Ministries. "We're still going to have the same great preaching, the same great music and pulpit guests. The ministry is not about the building ? it's more about our congregation and who we are."

Some, however, wonder whether the ministry will fizzle out ? or shrink dramatically ? without the building that gave it its name. Broadcasts of the "Hour of Power" were recently cut back to 30 minutes on Lifetime and Discovery channels and Schuller, now 85, no longer appears on the program and hasn't attended church since last fall.

His son and daughter, who each failed to assume their father's mantle, are no longer involved in the ministry. Sheila Schuller Coleman formed a new church after a falling out last year.

The congregation, which now numbers up to 1,700 people each Sunday, will also change its name once it moves.

"It really needs to go back to square one and say, 'Who are we going to be? We can't be what we were 10 to 15 years ago,'" said Kurt Fredrickson, an associate dean and assistant professor of pastoral ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary. "There could be resurrection there or it could be that we say goodbye to a congregation and bless them and be grateful and thank God for years and years and years of really wonderful ministry."

Schuller tapped into California's blossoming car culture and the optimism of a post-World War II generation when he began preaching in 1955 from the roof of a snack bar at a drive-in movie theater in suburban Orange County. He exhorted worshippers to "come as you are in the family car" and his upbeat message resonated.

By 1970, Schuller was airing the "Hour of Power" and in 1980, he dedicated the Crystal Cathedral, an architectural marvel that served as the backdrop for the show. At its peak, the broadcast attracted 20 million viewers around the world.

The Rev. Christopher Smith, the Catholic episcopal vicar and rector of the newly baptized Christ Cathedral, recalls as a child watching from his grandparents' backyard as the young, energetic evangelist preached from the roof of the drive-in theater's concession stand. Now, Smith is in charge of a delicate transition as the diocese prepares to move into a religious and architectural touchstone cherished by evangelicals around the world.

The diocese hopes to honor Schuller and the history of his ministry with a museum that begins with the drive-in movie theater and ends with the Catholic acquisition. The diocese may also move its archives, which are currently not publicly available, to the cathedral grounds, said Smith.

"I just hope that we attend well to all the different people who are affected by this and also that this place be seen as a place where everyone is welcome to find hope and consolation and inspiration, whether they're Catholic or not," Smith said.

"That's the bishop's desire ? that we are a real credible witness to Christ in the world through our work here."

Is a Chevrolet Volt lease through Ally Financial ?too affordable? not to pass up?

For certain consumers, this may be the case, and one reason why GM expects to sell 20,000 units this year, offers Motley Fool writer, Chris Baines.

?Despite Fox News' protests, perhaps the Chevy Volt is not a completely overpriced hunk of metal after all,? says Baines.

How so? By a confluence of factors, including that the $369 with zero-down starting lease price for a $40,000 Volt is only $80 per month more than a zero-down lease for an also-economical $22,095 entry level Toyota Camry.

Minimizing the fact that the Camry is a mid-size car and five-seater, the compact but spacious four-seater Volt is a way cooler ride, costs nearly twice to purchase, but its lease price is not nearly so much more, meaning leasing one is a screaming deal.

Further ? goes the napkin sketch approach to personal finance punditry ? operating costs for the Volt using only electricity assuming under 40 miles a day could mean total outlay would be cheaper for the Volt compared to a Camry that only runs on gasoline.

Of course consumers will want to take a closer look at their actual considerations, but the realities for this uniquely situated car could mean one theoretically beats the system ? or at least one could wind up feeling that way.

One unique factor for the Volt's lease is that Ally was faced with pinning a residual value on the new technology Volt ? which some have reported as too low ? but Baines suspects the residual may prove too high ? thus it helps reduce the monthly lease payment.

Not quite explicitly explained in the article is a leasing company is entitled to collect the full $7,500 federal tax credit and so the Volt?s effective base selling price is cut to $31,645.

Thinking like an investor, the investment advice writer opines that leasing further makes sense for the Volt as lease makers are hedging their bets as to where the technology ? and potentially used car value ? will go.

In one extreme example, if GM comes up with a substantially improved next-generation Volt, a leased first-gen example could see its resale value crash and burn ? not unlike any other outdated piece of consumer electronics. But if that happens, no problem, just turn it in, and let Ally absorb that loss, says Baines.

Or, goes the possibility thinker, the Volt could be a total flop and GM stops making them, in which case clean used examples could even have collector?s value. Under this scenario, one could buy the Volt at the fixed end-of-lease buyout price, and have made a wise purchase below market value.

Baines says he suspects GM too has effectively hedged its bets at taxpayer expense. Not only is it effectively capitalizing on the federal tax credit to offer a pain-free discount on its new technology, it only owns 9.9 percent of Ally, so guess who loses if the Volt does?

Right, you the taxpayer do, or rather the federal government does not to put too fine a point on it. Ally is 73.8 percent-owned by the U.S. Treasury, so as it bets on the winds of the future, less predictable risk could work either against it ? or in its favor ??and only time will tell.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A representative for 50 Cent says the rapper is out of the hospital after being injured in a car accident in New York on Tuesday morning.

The rep says 50 Cent was taken to New York Hospital Queens where he was treated for "minor neck and back injuries" and is now "doing fine."

Bruce Miller, who was driving the car, was also injured and has been released from the hospital.

Photos of the 36-year-old on a stretcher are posted on his website www.ThisIs50.com. The Grammy winner, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, appears in a neck brace in two photos.

No other details were provided.

Nano-sandwich technique slims down solar cells, improves efficiency

Researchers from North Carolina State University have found a way to create much slimmer thin-film solar cells without sacrificing the cells' ability to absorb solar energy. Making the cells thinner should significantly decrease manufacturing costs for the technology.

"We were able to create solar cells using a 'nanoscale sandwich' design with an ultra-thin 'active' layer," says Dr. Linyou Cao, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the research. "For example, we created a solar cell with an active layer of amorphous silicon that is only 70 nanometers (nm) thick. This is a significant improvement, because typical thin-film solar cells currently on the market that also use amorphous silicon have active layers between 300 and 500 nm thick." The "active" layer in thin-film solar cells is the layer of material that actually absorbs solar energy for conversion into electricity or chemical fuel.

"The technique we've developed is very important because it can be generally applied to many other solar cell materials, such as cadmium telluride, copper indium gallium selenide, and organic materials," Cao adds.

The new technique relies largely on conventional manufacturing processes, but results in a very different finished product. The first step is to create a pattern on the substrate using standard lithography techniques. The pattern outlines structures made of transparent, dielectric material measuring between 200 and 300 nm. The researchers then coat the substrate and the nanostructures with an extremely thin layer of active material, such as amorphous silicon. This active layer is then coated with another layer of dielectric material.

Using dielectric nanostructures beneath the active layer creates a thin film with elevated surfaces evenly spaced all along the film ? like crenellations at the top of a medieval castle.

"One key aspect of this technique is the design of the 'nanoscale sandwich,' with the active materials in the middle of two dielectric layers. The nanostructures act as very efficient optical antennas," Cao says, "focusing the solar energy into the active material. This focusing means we can use a thinner active layer without sacrificing performance. In the conventional thin-film design, using a thinner active layer would impair the solar cell's efficiency."

Operate Your Garage Sale Like A Business | Westport Graphics

With all the work that goes into a garage sale, you might as well bring in as much revenue as possible. That is why you should operate your garage sale like it?s a business. My recent garage sale generated more than $ 1,600 in sales.

Here are some guidelines and tips:

1. Besides all the items from your household you want to sell, embellish your selection with items you purchase elsewhere, just like any other retail business. For example, I bought 200 paperback books at an estate sale for ten cents each and offered them for sale at my garage sale for fifty cents each. The bigger selection I offer, the longer buyers will browse for something they like.
2. Bring in items from the family business. Maybe your family is in the construction industry, for example. Are there unused items leftover in the construction office, or jobsite? These might sell quickly to a do-it-yourselfer. I sell items on eBay. The items that do not sell end up on the shelves of my garage sale.
3. Make your garage sale an inviting atmosphere. Lots of lighting. A fan if it is hot. A radio or TV on. Pricing signs posted on the walls or tables.
4. Bottled water. Garage sales are usually held in hot weather. How about selling bottled water in an ice cooler? At my recent garage sale I bought three 24-bottle cases for $ 10 ($ 0.14 per bottle) and sold eight bottles for one dollar each. I could have done a better job of merchandising the bottled water than leaving it in a closed cooler. I had signs posted, but should have put the bottles in an open bin with ice to suggest their sale.
5. Advertise? advertise? advertise. First, online. You can place a free posting on craigslist or ebayclassifieds and go into lots of detail about what you are offering.
6. Use the local newspaper, the daily newspaper if possible. A 3-day listing of 7 lines in the Garage Sale section cost me $ 42.48. Avoid general phrases, like, ?Something for everyone.? Instead, promote your best products with phrases like: ?Baby clothes;? ?Hand Tools;? ?Xbox Games;? or ?Vintage Vinyl Records.?
7. I put up 26 garage sale yard signs in a 5-mile radius of my home. The idea is to capture as many passersby as possible. I placed signs at every main intersection. You can buy pre-made signs. The office supply shop near me sells four for $ 20. Or you can make your own, like I do. All year I am looking for abandoned real estate signs, political signs, and other yard and roadside signs. For a backing I use standard construction paper 22 inches x 28 inches in fluorescent colors. Two pieces will fit nicely over a standard yard sign frame. Staple them together along the edges. For the print, I use a contrasting fluorescent color of 8.5 x 11 paper. Using the same combination on all your signs lets drivers more easily follow the route to your garage sale. Use as few words as possible. Print them as big as possible on the computer, using Microsoft Word or the equivalent. The letters on my signs are 4.5 inches high. Simply highlight a word or letter, hold down the CTRL key, and touch the right bracket key ?]? till the letter or word gets as big as you want it. The idea is to allow drivers to quickly read your sign as they pass by.
8. After your garage sale is over for the day, drive around and inspect your signs. I found one sign had been relocated so the arrow pointed the wrong direction. Two other signs were stolen.
9. Set your hours to match the retail world. It does not have to be 24 hours, but my hours are 8 am to 6 pm.
10. Pick your own days. Standard garage sale days are Thursday, Friday and Saturday. My recent sale started on Tuesday and ended on Saturday. Next time I might try Monday through Wednesday. That way, you do not have any competition.
11. Make a daily deposit. Just like your local retailer, you should drop money in the ATM at the end of every day. This gives you the structure to know what your sales were and to appreciate the hard work it took to get them.
12. Consider the upcoming holiday. I didn?t plan it, but having my sale the week leading into Father?s Day helped me generate additional sales.
13. Take enough money out of the bank to provide all the change you need. Consider the worst-case scenario, when a customer presents you with a fifty or one hundred dollar bill, or even a twenty. My change bank was $ 170:20 dollars in quarters/50 dollars, in singles/40 dollars, in fives/60 dollars in tens. At the end of the sale the $ 170 goes back into the bank.
14. This sale I set up bargain bins containing items priced at $ 0.25, $ 0.50, $ 1.00, and $ 2.00. I also had two free bins, one for books. Garage sale buyers like to rummage for bargains.
15. I used two old bed sheets to cover up the wall behind the workbench that is full of tools. Otherwise I would have spent lots of time explaining the tools were not for sale.
16. Sweep the floor and driveway. Empty the trash. Keep the place clean for your customers.
17. If you plan on holding garage sales every summer, consider buying retail display racks. I bought two for $ 75 each from a video store liquidating its stock. Note the photo of it holding paperback books.
18. ?Are there any other garage sales in the area?? Many of your customers ask that. Clip out the garage sale section of the newspaper and post it on the wall for your customers to review.
19. Security. Best to have one other family member on hand. Do not leave doors to your house unlocked. Do not allow anyone into your house to use the bathroom. Watch for a large group of people coming in and creating confusion. Call the police if necessary. Set up a cashier station and stand at it when customers are shopping. Pay attention. Do not use your garage sale as a social gathering with neighbors; you won?t be paying attention to your customers.
20. Finally, keep notes of what sold well and what did not for your next garage sale. Make special note of items shoppers asked for, like coins or jewelry, or hand tools. You may want to add some for your next sale. Keep track of your sales and expenses.

Therefore operating your garage sale like it is a family business will definitely reward your hard work.

The Alliance For Change (AFC) has noted with concern that the acting Auditor General has promoted the wife of the Minister of Finance, Gitanjali Singh, to Audit Director. The promotion, according to the AFC, has created a situation in which Dr. Ashni Singh, as Finance Minister, holds the responsibility for the preparation and certification of the financial statements of the country, which results

in a conflict of interest as his wife is responsible for auditing those financial statements?
At a press conference hosted by the Alliance For Change, Member of Parliament, Trevor Williams, who is also on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), noted that collectively four persons were promoted, including the wife of the Minister of Finance.
?Ms. Gitanjali Singh, being the only qualified accountant among the senior management in the Audit Office, is integrally involved in the auditing of statements prepared by her husband and expressing an opinion on them.
?This is a clear conflict of interest and a breach of the professional code of accountants. Both Dr. Singh and his wife are professionally qualified accountants and are members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Guyana,? Williams noted.
He added that the AFC cannot accept that Deodat Sharma is unaware of the provisions of the Audit Act and does not know that he cannot legally do what he is now trying to do with the support of the PPP/C.
?The PPP/C is afraid that a proper functioning Audit Office would prevent the theft and corruption which now pervades this dear land.?
Underscoring that the Auditor General is among the most important offices under the Constitution of any country, Williams said that the duty of the holder is the guardian of the public purse with the responsibility to see that every dollar collected goes into the Consolidated Fund and not one dollar comes out of it without parliamentary approval.
He explained that whether substantively or as an acting appointment, the Auditor General is appointed by the President in accordance with the advice of the Public Service Commission. However, the current holder does not have a professional accounting qualification necessary for the position of Auditor General and has been acting in the position for more than seven years.
Williams said that the Constitution gives responsibility for the oversight of the Auditor General to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) but not in the exercise of his duties.
?But Presidential Advisor on Governance Ms. Gail Teixeira and Advisor of Empowerment Mr. Odinga Lumumba, two of the PPP/C?s members of the PAC, demonstrating amazing ignorance of the law are accusing the Opposition of ?interfering in Audit Office internal affairs and stymieing the process of collaboration and trust,? Williams opined.
?This is the new game being played by the PPP/C. If they do not get their way they accuse the other side of non-cooperation. It does not escape us that what the PPP/C might be trying to do is undermine the work of the PAC on the 2010 government accounts. They know that they no longer have majority control of the PAC which allowed for a limited examination of the past reports. They are afraid of the serious defects which a thorough review of the 2010 accounts and the audit report will reveal.?
Adding that if corruption is to be controlled the Audit Office needs qualified, independent professionals backed by a sufficient number of support staff, Williams said it is time for the country to have a qualified and substantive Auditor General, and the AFC is calling on the Public Service Commission to take steps to advise the President on the matter.
The PAC is a nine-person Committee made up of four members of the Government and five from the opposition (APNU-4 and AFC-1). The Committee is chaired by Carl Greenidge, a former Minister of Finance.
In addition to the constitutional provisions, there is an Audit Act which contains the law governing the Audit Office. Section 14 (3) of this Act states that ?The Auditor General?s appointment and discipline of all senior officers and senior employees shall be subject to the approval of the Public Accounts Committee?. In other words, the appointment which Mr. Sharma is seeking to make requires the approval of the Public Accounts Committee.

That?s what small business owners Jake Gottlieb and Jason Hung decided to do when they launched Levion, a QuickBooks add-on that brings small business accounting to the cloud.

As small business owners, they believed that the problem with the QuickBooks accounting software was that they couldn?t use it while away from the office.?Hung, who?s a programmer, and Gottlieb decided to develop an application that would allow them to access their QuickBooks documents remotely.

They decided to commoditize the application and have now been approved for a QuickBooks Gold Developer status which is given to developers who sell applications that work with the major accounting software and who seek a relationship with?Intuit Developer Network, the company that owns QuickBooks.

?We want to work with the big guys, not fight them,? Gottlieb said.

With Levion, QuickBooks users can access their accounts from their laptops, desktop computers, smartphones, tablets and any other Internet-enabled devices with full-featured web browsers.

Everything done on the web-based Levion application syncs with the offline QuickBooks software through the Levion Connector, which also makes updating and debugging easier since its done via the web rather than on a hard drive bound program, according to the website.

?Levion builds a staircase from your desktop to the Internet and the cloud,? Gottlieb said.

QuickBooks offers online services at additional costs but Levion is free. Gottlieb said the application allows QuickBooks customers to continue to use the accounting software that they know and trust, while providing an affordable solution for switching over to the cloud.

Gottlieb said they have no intention of charging for the basic Levion product, which was launched with the help of a private investor, but that they will charge for special features in the near future. They are currently focusing on product development and user acquisition, and they are talking with venture capitalists.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? A Delta Air Lines subsidiary closed Friday on a deal to purchase a suburban Philadelphia oil refinery and plans to resume fuel production in the fall, a move the airline hopes can cut its jet fuel bill by $300 million a year.

The company closed on the $180 million purchase of the refinery in Trainer and a union official said workers are expected to start returning and getting the plant ready next week.

"Finally, and fortunately, the deal was done," said Denis Stephano, president of the local steelworkers union, who represents about 220 workers at the plant. "We're looking forward to going back to work."

In April, Delta announced plans to buy the idled ConocoPhillips refinery. ConocoPhillips shut down operations at the facility in the fall and threatened to close the facility if a buyer wasn't found by the end of May.

Officials said the refinery is expected to restart in September and that a Delta subsidiary ? Monroe Energy LLC ? will run it. Monroe will start a turnaround at Trainer after the July 4 holiday and plans to resume fuel production in the fall, company officials said in a statement.

"We have a team of refining experts and proven leaders effectively implementing our strategy at the Trainer Refinery," said Jeffrey Warmann, chief executive officer and president of Monroe Energy. "We are eager to start the work before us and humbled by this opportunity to make a difference in this community."

The company has said it expects to have about 400 workers at the plant. Stephano said nearly all of the workers who wanted to return to work at the facility will be able to do so.

Workers will begin returning next week for orientation and training, he said. Over the next 50 to 60 days they will be doing maintenance work and getting ready to resume production.

The closing comes a day after state regulators approved a pipeline transfer that was part of Delta's plans to buy the refinery.

Drobo debuts a duo of Thunderbolt drives: the 5D for desktops and the Mini for road warriors

Drobo's been delivering quality desktop storage for businesses and prosumers for awhile now, but previously, the company hadn't dipped its toe into Thunderbolt waters. But that's about to change with its two new units. The 5D is a BYOD desktop offering with two Thunderbolt ports and one USB 3.0 socket for connecting up to five hot-swappable, 3.5-inch drives to your Mac or PC. It also has an mSATA SSD for data-caching quickness and a variable-speed fan to keep things cool and quiet. We don't know exactly when the 5D will go on sale -- Drobo's not telling until July -- but it'll cost under $850 when it does, and that price includes a Thunderbolt cable.

Meanwhile, the Mini is the first Drobo meant to be taken on the road. It packs up to four 2.5-inch drives in its front bays, plus, like the 5D, there's an mSATA SSD nestled in its underside that serves as a caching tier to speed up your main storage -- all in a 7.3 x 1.8 x 7.1-inch package weighing three pounds when fully loaded. All the drives are hot-swappable, a process made simple and easy with a trick, spring-loaded mechanism (patent pending) that lets users swap drives as they would SD cards. As for connecting the thing to your computer, dual Thunderbolt ports (for daisy chaining) and one USB 3.0 port reside round back along with the power plug and two vents for the Mini's variable-speed fans. Ringing the front face of the Mini are five LED strips that serve as drive indicators and capacity meter to let you know when a drive has failed or you're running out of space. Intrigued?
