Samsung Launches First Windows Phone 8 Smartphone, Vows Commitment To Microsoft's OS

Samsung beat Nokia to the punch this week, unveiling the world's first smartphone based on Microsoft's new Windows Phone 8 OS.

Samsung lifted the curtain on its new Windows Phone-powered smartphone, called the Ativ S, at the IFA event in Berlin on Wednesday. The new device has a 4.8-inch HD display, runs on a 1.5GHz processor and is the first-ever to launch with Microsoft's latest mobile OS.

The Ativ S debut comes just one week before Nokia, the Finnish OEM that has become the de facto maker of Windows Phone-based smartphones, is widely expected to unveil its first Windows Phone 8 device on Sept. 5. Since Nokia's flagship line of Lumia smartphones will not be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 8 because of hardware limitations, as is the case with all smartphones running Windows Phone 7.5 or earlier versions of the OS, Nokia's new phone is expected to be an entirely new model.

The new Ativ S could also represent a shift on Samsung's part to reduce some of its reliance on Google's Android OS, the mobile operating system that currently fuels its full lineup of Galaxy smartphones and tablets. After Samsung was found guilty last week of infringing on several Apple patents for the iPad and iPhone -- an outcome that is demanding it pay a whopping $1.05 billion damages -- some were left wondering whether Apple will target Google and its Android ecosystem next.

"It's highly likely that Samsung will seek to reduce its dependence on Google, while it continues to strengthen its Window-based product lineup," Lee Sun-tae, an analyst at NH Investment & Securities, recently told the Wall Street Journal.

Samsung, for its part, said in a statement Wednesday that it is "committed to offering more choices based on the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 platforms for consumers." In addition to the Ativ S, the Korean tech giant also unveiled an 11.6-inch Ativ Smart PC notebook and a 10.1-inch Ativ Tab tablet, also based on Windows 8.

Samsung has offered other Windows Phone-based smartphones prior to the Ativ's launch, including its Focus line of devices, but they never gained the same popularity among consumers as its Android-based Galaxy phones have over the past few years.

Samsung's continued investment and "commitment" to the Windows ecosystem could give Microsoft a significant boost in the mobile market, where its Windows Phone platform currently accounts for a meager 4 percent of the U.S. subscriber base, according to recent research from ComScore. Android, by comparison, accounts for 50.8 percent. But with the support of Samsung, which ComScore pegged as being the biggest handset maker in U.S. with 25.9 percent share, Windows Phone could gain a new competitive edge.

The new Ativ S smartphone and other Windows-powered Ativ devices were launched this week alongside Samsung's new Galaxy Note II half-smartphone, half-tablet device, which, like its strong-selling predecessor the Galaxy Note, runs on Google's Android OS.

Cellphone tracking tracks the current position of a cellular telephone even for your move. To locate the phone, it must give off at least the roaming signal to contact an upcoming nearby antenna tower, but the process does not want an active call. GSM localization is then done by multilateration with regards to the signal strength to adjacent antenna masts. In order to route calls to your phone the cell towers listen for a signal sent from the phone and talk terms which tower is best able to communicate with all the phone. As the phone changes location, the towers monitor the signal and the phone is switched to a different tower as appropriate. By comparing the relative signal strength from multiple towers a general location of a phone can be determined. The technology of tracking is based on measuring power levels and antenna patterns and uses the concept that a cell always communicates wirelessly with one of the closest base stations, so if you know which base station the phone communicates with, you know that the phone is around the respective base station. Advanced systems determine the sector in which the cell resides and roughly estimate also the distance to the base station. Further estimate can be done by interpolating signals between adjacent antenna towers. Qualified services may achieve a precision of down to 50 meters in urban areas where mobile traffic and density of antenna towers (base stations) is sufficiently high. Rural and desolate areas may see miles between base stations and therefore determine locations less precisely.   Operational purpose.   In order to route calls to a phone the cell towers listen for a signal sent from the phone and negotiate which tower is best able to communicate with the phone. As the phone changes location, the antenna towers monitor the signal and the phone is roamed to an adjacent tower as correct. By comparing the relative signal strength from multiple antenna towers a general location of a phone can be approximately set. Other means is the antenna pattern that supports angular purpose and phase favouritism. Newer phones may also allow the tracking of the phone even when randy and not active in a phone call -. This results from the roaming operations that perform hand over of the phone from one base station to another. The rule of tracking is based on GSM localization.   GLOBAL SYSTEM FOR MOBILE COMMUNICATION (GSM).   GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) is the most popular standard for cellphone in the world. Its promoter, the GSM Association, prices that 82 % of the global mobile market uses the standard. GSM is used by over 3 billion people across more 212 countries and territories. Its ubiquitousness makes international roaming very common between cellphone operators, enabling subscribers to use their phones in many parts of the world. GSM differs from its harbingers in this both signaling and speech channels are digital, and thus is named a second generation (2G) cellphone system. This has also meant that digital communication was easy to establish into the system. The ubiquity of the GSM standard is definitely an advantage to both consumers (who benefit from the ability to roam and switch carriers without switching phones) and also to network operators (who can choose equipment from any of the many sellers implementing GSM). GSM also initiated a low cost (to the network carrier) alternative to voice calls, the Short message service (SMS, also called "text messaging"), which is now supported on other mobile standards also. Newer versions of the standard were backward-compatible with the original GSM phones. For example, Release '97 of the standard added packet data capablenesses, by means of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). Release' 99introduced higher speed data transmission using Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE).   GSM security.   GSM was designed with a restrained level of security. The system was designed to authenticate the subscriber using a pre-shared key and challenge-response. Communications between the subscriber and the base station can be encrypted. The development of UMTS introduces an optional USIM, that uses a longer authentication key to give greater security, as well as reciprocally authenticating the network and the user whereas GSM only authenticates the user to the network (and not the other way around). The security model therefore offers confidentiality and certification, but limited authorization capablenesses, and no non-repudiation. GSM uses several cryptological algorithms for security.   Global Positioning System.   The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). The GPS uses a configuration of between 24 and 32 Medium Earth Orbit satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, which enable GPS receivers to determine their current location, the time, and their velocity (including direction). GPS was developed by the United States Department of Defense. Global Positioning System (GPS) is comprised of 24 U.S. government owned satellites that circle 12,000 miles above the earth, twice a day in precise orbits, so that several are always in view from any position. The system is designed to provide worldwide positioning services with an accuracy ranging from 10 to15 meters. Instant location information enables users to ascertain exactly where their vehicles or assets are at anytime, anywhere in the world. Due to minor timing errors and satellite orbit errors, however, more precise accuracies are unattainable with standard GPS. Atmospheric conditions can also affect GPS signals and their arrival time on Earth.

Cyber spying spreads in Iran after operation blown: researchers

BOSTON?? The scope of a cyber espionage campaign targeting Iran and other parts of the Middle East has widened, even after security experts blew the operation's cover last month, according to the research firm that discovered the Mahdi Trojan.

Israeli security company Seculert said it had identified about 150 new victims over the past six weeks as developers of the Mahdi virus had changed the code to evade detection by anti-virus programs. That has brought the total number of infections found so far to nearly 1,000, the bulk of them in Iran.

"These guys continue to work," Seculert Chief Technology Officer Aviv Raff said via telephone from the company's headquarters in Israel.

The decision to keep the operation running implies that Mahdi's operators were not particularly worried about getting caught, said Roel Schouwenberg, a senior researcher with Kaspersky Lab, which has collaborated with Seculert to analyze Mahdi.

Schouwenberg said some viruses are designed for stealth because they become useless if they are discovered. He pointed to the Stuxnet Trojan that targeted Iran's nuclear program in 2010. After that customer-built virus was uncovered by a security researcher in Belarus, authorities in Iran discovered it in a uranium enrichment facility that it had targeted.

Mahdi is a "less professional" operation that runs on technology built with widely available software, according to Schouwenberg.

"If the quality of your operation is not that high, then maybe you don't care about being discovered," he said. "But the scary thing is that it can still be effective."

The Mahdi Trojan allows remote attackers to steal files from infected PCs, and monitor emails and instant messages, Seculert and Kaspersky said. It can also record audio, log keystrokes and take screen shots of activity on those computers.

The firms said they believed multiple gigabytes of data have been uploaded from targeted machines.

Targets of Mahdi include critical infrastructure firms, engineering students, financial services firms and government embassies located in five Middle Eastern countries, with the majority of the infections in Iran, according to the two security firms.

The bulk of the new victims were also in Iran, according to Seculert, though a few were identified in the United States and Germany.

The two firms have declined to identify specific victims.

Seculert's Raff said he suspected the campaign was being run by hacker activists, or "hactivists," who were either funded by a government or who provide information they collect to a nation for ideological reasons. He declined to say which country might be involved.

Seculert and Kaspersky dubbed the campaign Mahdi after a term referring to the prophesied redeemer of Islam because evidence suggests the attackers used a folder with that name as they developed the software to run the project.

They also included a text file named mahdi.txt in the malicious software that infected target computers.

?Missing? woman unknowingly joins search for herself

A woman who was reported missing from an Icelandic tour unwittingly joined a search for herself.

According to the Reykjavik Grapevine, a woman described as "Asian, about 160cm, in dark clothing and speaks English well" was listed as missing Saturday near the Eldgj? volcanic canyon in southern Iceland.

A search continued through the weekend with reports saying she got off a tour bus and never returned.

It turns out the woman merely changed clothes during the bus stop, and after she returned, those on the bus didn't recognize her.

When the description of the "missing" woman was circulated, apparently the lady who changed her outfit didn't recognize the description of herself. So she joined the search party.

About 50 people searched the area in vehicles and on foot, and a helicopter was ready to assist.

Eventually it occurred to the "missing" woman that she could very well be the person everyone was looking for, and she promptly reported herself as safe and sound to police.

The search was called off early Sunday morning.

Not in Romney's speech: Iraq, Social Security

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Social Security. Medicare. Iraq. Afghanistan. Illegal immigration.

They're all costly to taxpayers and the next president presumably will have to address them to one degree or another. Yet GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney made no mention of those issues Thursday in his wide-ranging acceptance speech that closed the Republican National Convention.

The address was Romney's most sweeping attempt yet to outline the case for his candidacy. It was no time to get into the nitty-gritty of federal budgeting and solutions to the nation's ills. But Romney did find ways to talk about an array of other issues, some of them sensitive for him personally and politically.

Romney did, for example, pledge to "protect the sanctity of life," a reference to abortion, even though there are clear differences on the issue between him and running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. He referred to his family as Mormons, a rarity for a candidate who typically refers to his religion as "my faith." And Romney even showed emotion, which he seldom does in public, when he spoke of longing to wake up again with a pile of children in the bedroom he shares with wife Ann.

But there was much Romney did not say, areas he didn't address. And those unmentioned topics say a lot about the challenges that face the Republican ticket in the final three months of the presidential campaign.

Here are some examples and some clues about why Romney may have chosen to skip them:

?WHAT TO DO ABOUT WAR. Polls show that most Americans want to get American troops out of the costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and President Barack Obama is generally seen as a president who is doing just that. Obama began drawing down the force with a plan to have all out by the end of 2014. While Romney has occasionally criticized Obama for signaling when the drawdown in Afghanistan would happen, he also has endorsed the 2014 end to U.S. combat in Afghanistan, subject to conditions at the time. Romney has criticized Obama's withdrawal plan but offered few details about how he would change it.

?GOVERNMENT AID: On Social Security, Romney has not talked specifics about what we would do with these budget-busting entitlement programs other than to say he would gradually raise the retirement age on the massive program for aid to seniors. He generally has steered clear of proposals to touch Medicare and Social Security in the short run, which leaves a relatively limited portion of the $3.6 trillion federal budget to cut. His addition of Ryan has caused Romney a headache as Democrats seek to make him own Ryan's budget proposals that call for Social Security benefits based on workers' needs and optional private alternatives to Medicare.

?ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION: It's a touchy subject for both Romney and the Republican Party. Challenged on the right during the primary season, Romney struck a tougher stance on the issue than he had in the past. He emphasized his support for a U.S.-Mexico border fence and his opposition to education benefits to illegal immigrants, sometimes in sharp tones that caused some Hispanics to turn away. That's potentially problematic because Republicans are trying to narrow the advantage Democrats have among Hispanics, the nation's fastest-growing ethnic minority group. It represents large chunks of the voters in swing states like Florida and Colorado. Some 12.2 million Hispanics are expected to vote in November.

While Romney glossed over these issues, it's a good bet Democrats won't let him do so again between now and November.

Samsung reveals new Galaxy Note II

NEW YORK (AP) ? Fresh off a legal battle with Apple, Samsung is announcing a new version of the Galaxy Note, an offbeat, oversized smartphone that's become a surprise hit.

Samsung, the world's largest maker of phones, is revealing the Galaxy Note II at a trade show in Berlin. The 5.5-inch screen is narrower but longer than on the first version. The processor is faster, and the software has been further adapted for the included stylus ? the phone's signature feature.

While Apple has been releasing a new smartphone model each year, Samsung makes several to target different types of customers. That includes low-end phones for price-conscious customers. As a result, Samsung has been selling more smartphones than Apple this year.

The Note runs on Google's Android operating system but isn't among the phones that Apple is asking a judge to ban from the U.S., after a jury in California ruled last week that some of Samsung's Android phones violated Apple patents. The jury awarded Apple $1 billion in damages in a high-profile case that could force Samsung and other Android phone makers to rethink their designs.

The Note is designed to work well with a stylus for jotting notes and drawing on a screen, while styluses for other devices tend to be an afterthought. The Note's large screen also makes the phone more like a tablet and more suitable for playing games and consuming content. Samsung started selling a tablet version of the Note this month.

Samsung Electronics Co. says it has shipped 10 million first-generation Galaxy Note smartphone in one year.

Samsung says the new phone will go on sale in Europe and Asia in October. It did not say when it would launch with a U.S. carrier.

Competition under way at Paralympics

Eleven days of top-class sport for athletes with disabilities got under way on Thursday on the first full day of the London Paralympics, with 28 gold medals up for grabs, among them cycling and swimming.

At the Velodrome on the Olympic Park in east London, five medals were to be contested in the men's and women's individual pursuit, while there were 15 finals at the Aquatics Centre after a day of swimming heats.

Judo and powerlifting also had finals but shooting was set to provide the first gold, with Britain's Di Coates -- aiming for her fourth Paralympic gold in eight Games -- favourite in the women's 10m standing air rifle.

The day's programme also includes heats in archery, equestrian, goalball, table tennis, sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball.

Britain's Nyree Kindred set a new Paralympic record in the second heat of the women's 100m backstroke S6 in 1min 27.96secs in a race that included the world record holder Mirjam de Koning-Peper, of the Netherlands.

Kindred, 31, a veteran of three previous Games, won the event at Athens in 2004. The event's final takes place on Thursday evening.

Among the other top swimmers beginning their gold hunt were Jessica Long of the United States and South Africa's Natalie du Toit, who is competing in seven events before retiring from the sport she has dominated for the last decade.

" I had the most rocking time in Puerto Rico at a political rally than I've ever had in my entire life," Romney said. "You people really know how to party. It was crazy!"

Romney added that the trip was a "wonderful chance" to "peak into a culture and a vibrancy and energy, a passion that I saw form that little island that really what represents the best in America."

"It is what you give to that country, a vibrancy, a color, a fabric of family and joy that anyone who is near your community recognizes that and feels it coming from you," Romney said.

An international team of researchers examined a commercially-important marine fish, the coral trout (Plectropomus leopardus). ?In two sites in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, they discovered 15 percent of the trout bore lesions like the melanoma lesions in laboratory experiments with Xiphophorus. (Those playfish or swordfish have long been used in cancer research.) Some of the coral trout had only small lesions. Others were nearly black with them.

Prior to this study, scientists assumed only the hybrid crosses of Xiphophorus bred in captivity could contract melanoma. Their wild relatives were not susceptible, even after being exposed to high doses of physical and chemical carcinogens.

The lesions on the Great Barrier Reef fish had not spread beyond the skin, but lead author Dr. Michael Sweet, University of Newcastle, cautions that does not mean melanoma is not harmful to fish. He said:

Once the cancer spreads further you would expect the fish to become quite sick, becoming less active and possibly feeding less, hence less likely to be caught. This suggests the actual percentage affected by the cancer is likely to be higher than observed in this study.

Dr. Michelle Heupel, Australian Institute of Marine Science, suggests the fish may have interbred, with hybridization giving them a genetic predisposition to melanoma. Their immune systems may also be compromised because of their living in an area that is near their temperature threshhold. She said:

It may just be that they?re living close to the edge there and this genetic composition makes them a little more susceptible. And that?s combined with UV exposure in the region. I really think it?s the combination of all those factors working together rather than one thing independently.

The research team cites an urgent need for more studies to determine what factors are causing the melanoma, how many fish are being killed by it, and how widespread the syndrome actually is. The answers will have important implications, not just for coral trout but also for commercial and recreational fisheries.
