The ongoing trend of the country's economy has prompted more and more adults to consider going back to school. Continuing education or participating in certain key courses can open doors to raising job security, increasing earning power, and even putting a person on a completely different career path. Unfortunately, the pressure from other responsibilities, such as taking care of a home and family, can end up hindering one's determination from doing so. Whatever the reasons may be, there are a few tips a prospective adult student can keep in mind to change a stressful situation into a successful experience.
Sturdy Support System Enlist the help and involvement of friends and family to make the upcoming transition easier and less stressful. For instance, kids will need to know that their assistance will be greatly needed and appreciated for tasks such as helping with chores and keeping up with their schoolwork. Teach them what they will need to know and be specific about quiet study periods that may take place. Do not let the guilt of some lost family time get in the way. Finding friends who are in a similar situation, or in the same classes, and holding joint study groups is another likely source of support. The key is to get everyone on the same page.
Financial Assistance Adults can actually have a greater chance at obtaining college money than their younger classmates. Adults often have clear goals, homes and families that motivate them to succeed in the classroom. This is why so many government grants and scholarships exist for people furthering their education. Here are some example actions to help pay for expenses. * Search online for grants, scholarships or a college savings plan. * Check the school's financial office for available options. * Ask the employer about conditions for possible tuition reimbursement.
Campus or Online If attending the actual campus, try to schedule classes that enable prioritizing and maximizing parenting, home and personal time. However, if time is scarce or too sporadic for fixed class times, online options provide more flexibility in this aspect. Use of good judgment here is important. Online classes are often accelerated as well. Make sure the school is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation before signing up.
Utilize Special Services Find out if the school has programs or services specifically for adult learners and take advantage of them. This includes free training seminars for technological skills, child care, career counseling and refresher courses. Do not forget to ask about the help an adult student can get from local community centers and nonprofit organizations.
