When it comes to body art, it is difficult to strike a balance between trashy and trendy. Piercings have long been viewed, along with tattoos and other semi-permanent body alterations, as a rebellious form of self-expression. Add a stud to your nose or some ink to your wrist and suddenly you have an edge.
In recent years, however, this societal perception has begun to change (anyone see The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo? Rooney Mara makes disheveled punk look hot. And FYI, the piercings are real!). Now, piercings and tattoos are not only discussed within the categorical realm of body art, but of beauty. It is becoming more and more common for youth to embrace trendy trademarks, like tastefully-done piercings and subtle tattoos, not as forms of negative, self-destructive expression, but means of enhancing one?s natural beauty.
Body art is now being thought of along the lines of more socially acceptable modification tools like makeup, hair dye, and clothing. A nose piercing is no longer a surefire cry for help from a troubled youth. It?s a trendy, tasteful, aesthetically pleasing fashion accessory.
If you?re thinking about revamping your appearance with a piercing or tattoo, consider the following tips to make sure that your new look is trendy, not trashy.
Tips for Tasteful Tattoos:
Choose white or bronze ink.
These lighter colored inks are very subtle. Instead of appearing harsh like most blue and black inks, they appear soft and pretty. They are also easier to cover and even fade after several years.
Place your tattoo on an area of your body that is easy to cover.
For example, a tattoo on your wrist can be easily hidden by wearing bracelets.
Get a tattoo with genuine significance.
It will enhance your outer beauty by reflecting your inner beauty.
Tips for Tasteful Piercings
Choose small jewelry.
If you want your nose or eyebrow pierced, for example, use a very small stud or a dainty ring. If it?s too big, it may be gaudy.
Keep it clean!
It is all too easy for facial piercings to become irritated and infected (not at all tasteful). If you?re going to put a hole in your face, you absolutely have to take care of it! Use a salt based solution and crushed Aspirin to eliminate bacteria and minimize inflammation.
Moderation.
The more piercings you have, the more difficult it will be to tastefully pull them off, no matter how closely you follow the other rules.
And the number one rule of tasteful body art? NEVER add anything to your body that scares children. Do you remember being freaked out by people with outlandish tattoos and piercings when you were a child? If so, keep that in mind as you consider altering your appearance.
