Expect big catches and big names at Little Lake for this year?s Fishing for the Cure, an annual competition to raise money to fight childhood cancer.
Professional anglers Dave Mercer and J.P. DeRose will return to cast their lines and reel in some donations. Former NHL players Kris King and Dave Reid will also be in one of the 10 boats in this year?s competition, as will local lacrosse star Shawn Evans.
The event begins at noon July 18 with activities at Del Crary Park, including Bassmasters fishing lessons and a barbecue. The boats set out at 3:30 p.m. and the official weigh-in will be 4 p.m.
For $1,000, sponsors can fish with a pro angler and celebrity athlete during the competition. There will be a 6 p.m. celebrity dinner and auction at Holiday Inn with $60 tickets sold at the door.
Fishing for the Cure began four years ago in memory of Courtney Morrison, a 16-year-old St. Peter Catholic Secondary School student who died of Hodgkin?s lymphoma in 2009.
?When she was in the hospital she asked us not to let anyone forget about her, not to let anyone forget her name, to keep her memory alive,? says Murray Henderson, Courtney?s stepfather, who founded The Henderson Family Courtney Morrison Legacy Fund. ?We wanted to do something in her memory.?
Last year the tournament raised $10,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.
?I thought this would be a very unique way to keep Courtney?s name alive and to raise money and awareness about childhood cancer,? says Henderson.
He hopes more children will attend this year?s event, particularly those who have been affected by cancer.
?Courtney hated seeing any kids being cooped up in the hallway of Sick Kids Hospital when they could have been out enjoying the weather,? says Henderson. ?I hope this event gets more kids of the computer and outside to enjoy Peterborough?s environment.?
