Many elderly people on have dangerous and inadequate heating
TODAY, the ECHO reveals the tragic winter reality for some of the most vulnerable people in Merseyside.
Our investigation shows how the elderly struggle to survive cold snaps equipped only with dangerous and inadequate heating.
But a recently-launched?Liverpool?scheme is identifying those most at risk and saving lives before it is too late.
Our report reveals how:
An 86-year-old was found dead in front of his broken heater, still wearing his coat and cap in an attempt to keep warm;
A Dovecot woman in her 80s, with dementia, lit her fire by carrying flaming paper from the kitchen cooker to the living room heater;
A painfully-thin Kensington man, in his 80s, was unaware of a potentially-fatal carbon monoxide leak in his meter cupboard;
A Wirral man, in his 70s, died after suffering burns and smoke inhalation due to ineffective heating;
A 91-year-old woman from West Derby, with a chest infection, was found with a condemned 50-year-old heater that was spewing out potentially-fatal carbon monoxide;
An elderly woman, regularly cooking meals for her two sisters, who had long died, was placing their meals on the table in her home, which had a gas leak.
Health bosses have identified carbon monoxide leaks and cold houses as the biggest killers of elderly people in the city.
