From The Brisbane Times?..
Catholic and Baptist men in Australia are more likely to be overweight than their Anglican or non-religious peers, according to a new Queensland study which had found a causal relationship between spiritual belief and body mass index.
Researchers at Southern Cross University, led by senior lecturer Michael Kortt, found the link between weight and religion by analysing data from the national Household Income Labour Dynamics survey.
And when taken in context with other international studies, Dr Kortt said there were sound grounds for assuming that the causal relationship runs from religion to BMI.
?It?s not conclusive, but there is at least some suggestive evidence that confirms religion influences weight and not the other way around,? he said.
?We did explore the other direction ? the idea that weight may drive people to religion for comfort for psychological or emotional support ? but we didn?t find a particularly strong relationship between religious affiliation and the probably of being dissatisfied with one?s weight.
?So that, prima face at least, gives us some comfort that [the relationship] moves from religion to BMI.?
Religion and BMI in Australia, published in the Journal of Religion and Health, used HILDA data for 9408 adults aged 18 and older, and controlled for other factors which may contribute to a high BMI, such as age, frequency of exercise, level of education, employment and marital status.
